Welcome to River City Junior Rowing

Welcome to the RCRC Junior Team

Competitive RowinG for 9th - 12th grades

River City Juniors

River City Rowing Junior Crew is a competitive program geared toward athletes looking for something that will challenge them both in sport and in life. RCRC offers teens (14-18yr) a safe environment in which fitness, self-discipline, teamwork and camaraderie are emphasized. RCRC trains from late August through mid-May, competing against more than 35 other junior rowing programs in the Southwest District. RCRC competes in regional as well as national events including the USRowing Southwest Youth Championship, to qualify for USRowing Youth National Championship regatta.

Our squads - Varsity Men, Varsity Women, and Novice Men & Women - generally have 16 - 32 athletes each. We embrace the quality of our coaching and this athlete-coach ratio is conducive to the specific attention and coaching our team of coaches strives to give each athlete.

Athletes new to rowing can start by joining the Junior Novice Team anytime September through January, or signing up for a Summer Learn to Row Class.

Start of the Season: Saturday January 9

Start Rowing

September through January - Join the Junior Team

The RCRC competitive Junior Team encourages 9th-12th graders to come try a new sport. 8th graders are considered for the Junior Team based on maturity and athleticism. Those who are not yet ready for the Junior Team are encouraged to join middle school rowing before joining the Junior Team as a 9th grader. In Spring 2021, the Junior Rowing Team will only be rowing in single person boats, as well as conducting land practices. There are no competitions on the schedule. We are looking forward to training and developing our skills in singles, alongside great teammates.

Join the pre-season Junior Novice Parent Meeting on Thursday September 3 at 7:00PM to learn more and have your questions answered by Head Coach Arthur Ericsson. If your athlete intends to register for the Junior Novice Team please plan to attend the Zoom meeting. All parents and athletes who are interested in the team are encouraged to attend.

Rowers who have taken a Summer Learn to Row class are encouraged to register directly for the Junior Novice Team, so you can be assigned to your practice days and be ready to start rowing on Sept 9. See the directions below to Join the Jr Team and email Head Coach Arthur Ericsson if you have any questions, ed@rivercityrowing.org

New to rowing? Try rowing with the RCRC Junior Team for free - no experience necessary! Review the three steps below and then sign up to try the team so our coaches can coordinate your first day of practice and answer any questions you have.

Membership & Dues

RCRC strives to keep dues low, and ensure that all local high school students who are interested in rowing have the opportunity to participate, regardless of their financial situation. The fees cover the Junior Crew's projected costs for: coaching instruction, USRowing membership, athlete & club insurance, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities, and management of the Club/Team.

For the 2020-2021 rowing year, registration is split into a fall and spring season, so we can set the spring schedule and dues when we have more up to date information on what to expect in spring 2021 regarding races and events. For information on Spring 2021 dues, and practice structure, visit the registration page.

UPDATE 12/15/20: Priority registration for athletes on the Fall 2020 roster will open on December 22. If you did not row this past fall, please add to the waitlist using the links on the Junior Team Registration Page so we can invite you to practice, if space opens on the roster.

Junior Scholarships/Financial Aid

Scholarships are available on a financial-need basis. For more information about scholarship support for participation in RCRC rowing, please contact RCRC Treasurer Robin Madsen at treasurer@rivercityrowing.org. Scholarships are based on family income, number of family members, and hardship.

Junior athletes and their families should be familiar with the information and policies provided in the Jr Team Handbook. Questions regarding Team policies may be directed to Arthur.
